World Migratory Bird Day

May 11 - 12

Theme for 2013: Networking for Migratory Birds
World Migratory Bird Day is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats. .
The 2013 theme highlights the importance of networks of sites for migratory birds along their migration routes.... Migratory birds travel huge distances along their migration routes, sometimes even tens of thousands of kilometres. These connected sites act like 'stepping stones' and are used by birds to migrate. They are important for resting, feeding, breeding and wintering.

Mole-snake killed

This dead Mole-snake was seen on the corner of Chaffinch street and Canary crescent in Tableview.

Measurement: 2,3 Meters

The mole snake can be "quite ferocious".
Though not venomous, they can cause severe bite wounds. Despite this, they are said to make good pets when sufficiently settled.

The primary food source of P. cana comprises golden moles (hence the name), rodents, and other small mammals. For this reason, it is considered useful for the natural control of problem rodents.

Apologies

I have been neglecting my blogging terribly but shall get back to regular blogging when we relocate to Cape L'Agulhas.

I have been saddened by the indiscriminate removal of large trees at Rietvlei and is no longer involved with the conservation side there.
