Rietvlei Walk

Birds spotted:

  • * 8 Black-headed Herons - one has just caught a frog. There seems to be a great number of frogs in the area (photograph below)

  • * A pair of Black-shouldered Kites in the area between North and South-vlei

22 January 2009 (Rietvlei – North lake and nature garden)

22 January 2009 (Rietvlei – North lake and nature garden)

Birds in the North Lake near the Slipway:

  • A Crested Grebe with a month old chick.
  • About 2000 Avocets

We had 1 mm rain last night and this afternoon the birds were feeding like crazy, among them were:

  • About 1000 Little Swift
  • Black Saw-wing Swallows
  • White-throated Swallows

This is the first time I have seen a grebe chick in the North Lake and I have never seen so many Avocets here or anywhere else.

  • Black-headed Heron in the Nature garden
