22 January 2009 (Rietvlei – North lake and nature garden)

Birds in the North Lake near the Slipway:

  • A Crested Grebe with a month old chick.
  • About 2000 Avocets

We had 1 mm rain last night and this afternoon the birds were feeding like crazy, among them were:

  • About 1000 Little Swift
  • Black Saw-wing Swallows
  • White-throated Swallows

This is the first time I have seen a grebe chick in the North Lake and I have never seen so many Avocets here or anywhere else.

  • Black-headed Heron in the Nature garden

photograph Rock Kestrel - By Wally Wolhuter - Rietvlei

20 Jan 2009 (Rietvlei, Cape)

Morning patrol:

  • One pair of Spotted Thick-knee in the car park with almost fully grown chicks.
  • Did not see the Water Thick-knee at fishing site 4
On the way to the bird-hide I met Margaret who helped me with the identifications of the Brown-throated Sand Martins

Other birds seen along the path to the hide:

  • 1 Pin-tailed Whydah
  • 1 Marsh Harrier
  • 1 Purple Heron
  • 1 Rock Kestrel
  • 1 Black-shouldered Kite
  • 10 Glossy ibis
  • 50 Pelicans
  • 200 Avocets on the pan at the hide.
  • 6 Spur winged Geese

The South Lake bird-hide, when completed, will give birders a very clear view of the pelicans Spurt winged Geese and other birds.

The plan is to get the board-walk completed by March 1. (Cross fingers)

Tick-knee Chick 19-01-2009

Photographed Dikkop chick - by Wally Wolhuter - Rietvlei, Cape

19-Jan 2009

Remained at the reserve later than usual.

The wind was howling at 40 knots +.

While passing fishing site four, I saw the Water Thick-knee sitting under the trees, and to my surprise, there I spotted two chicks.

As soon as they saw me they scurried under their mother's soft plumage for protection.

While surveying the area of Rietvlei, I noticed that the Rock Kestrel has taken over the bird hide block area as his territory.

The Black-shouldered Kite was seen here previously.
